Breaking down the design process

quantitive research

Undertaking a desktop study, researching the current state of Entrepreneurship in the UK and Worldwide, highlighting the overwhelming inequality in attitude towards entrepreneurship. Despite internet access increasing the opportunity, confidence in starting a business was still overwhelmingly chosen by white males. However, there has been encouragement for minority groups to take opportunities. This research clearly demonstrated an opportunity for a product to connect experienced and inexperienced entrepreneurs.

Quantitative Research

Competitive audit

Additional desktop study analysis compared direct and indirect competitors across multiple categories. Each of the services compared offered experienced mentorship to help user development. Identified opportunities for a new product will be incorporated into low-fidelity prototypes and assessed by user research participants, to understand how they respond to features challenging established practices.

Information Architecture

Forming a hierarchical approach, the sitemap demonstrates the series of decisions made by the users to narrow down their search and find information specific to their needs. Immediately the site will be divided between mentors and mentees, helping to narrow down their search instantly. A similar approach has been established by all audited competitors, which should enable the user to navigate the site naturally when introduced to the new product.

Information Architecture

Wireframing

Incorporating the top-down approach, wireframes were initially sketched for desktop platforms and then developed for smaller devices, to be continued through to low-fidelity prototypes. Sketching the product enabled a quick and cost-effective way to determine the user interface and inform the information architecture further.

Research Overview

Remote moderated usability study, completing of a series of prompts within the prototype, identifying pain points. To understand the navigation experience and booking process, with effectiveness being measured by comparison of completion rate. Each prompt was completed across multiple platforms, to understand the user’s engagement utilising different devices.

Insight 1

Users expressed an interest in understanding the mentor perspective and suggested development of the other side of the platform, suggesting some users were interested in a collaborative product, giving and receiving advice.

Insight 2

Participants identified messages page required reworked to align more consistently with the rest of the product.

Insight 3

No booking confirmation caused participants frustration, with lack of anticipated feedback to completion of task.

Lessons Learnt

Refining my experience in Figma, this project enabled me to explore a community-based project to understand how product design can be used to bring people together. The prototype works successfully and builds of the design experimentation developed in previous projects.

Insight 1

Incorporating a video conferencing aspect to enable mentors and mentees to meet virtually would help when time constraints prevent users from arranging meeting in person.

Insight 2

Considering the different perspective of different user groups helps strengthen the continuity of the platform. In this circumstance, considering the requirements of the mentor as well as the mentee.

Insight 3

Increased accessibility for the product, enabling it to combine with screen readers and incorporate other accessibility requirements.
